How to help your child if they get lost

Getting lost – or your child getting lost from you – is a situation that scares most parents. Whether it happens in a park, a shopping mall or on an outing, it’s important that your child knows what to do. In this post, you’ll find tips on how to prepare your child, how to talk to strangers, and how the Xplora watch can be a safe help when the unexpected happens.

Prepare the child in advance

Children who are prepared feel safer and act more independently in unexpected situations – such as when they suddenly cannot find their parent.

Review what the child should do if they can't find you. Having heard about the situation in advance can reduce stress and worry if it actually happens.

Teach your child to stay in one place instead of starting to lead. The risk is that you will pass each other and it will take longer to reunite.

Agree on a “meeting point” in advance for large events. You can also have fixed meeting points, such as always meeting in front of a café or at a bench. That way, the child knows where to go – and you know where to look.

Make sure the child knows your phone number, or has it written on a note in their pocket.

Talk to your child about strangers – without scaring them

Talking about strangers doesn't have to be scary. Strangers can also be helpful, for example if the child needs assistance. But it's important to teach the child the difference between which adults to trust and who to be careful with.

Explain the difference between “friendly adults” who can help (e.g. uniformed staff or adults with children) and people you should not go with.

Teach your child never to go with anyone without first asking a parent. Explain that if the child is talking to an unknown adult, there should always be other people around – never follow them to a secluded place.

A good tip: Use the “password trick”! Agree on a secret word that only the family knows – so the child knows that the person is approved by you.

Safe Technology for Children that Supports

Technology can be a great help in these situations. With an Xplora watch, you get several features that provide peace of mind if your child gets lost.

Calls with only approved contacts, so your child can easily call you – without a mobile phone. The watch's interface is simple and clear with pictures, so your child doesn't need to be able to read.

The GPS function allows you to quickly see where your child is via the app.

Safe zones notify you if your child leaves an area – perfect for big events.

The child can send pictures to show where they are.

You can send messages directly to the watch if you need to find each other.

The SOS function can be used if the child is in danger or cannot reach you.

Make it a habit to practice

Just like with fire safety and traffic rules, it's important to practice how your child will react if they get lost. Practice different safety scenarios every now and then.

Do little role plays: “What do you do if you can’t find mom at the store?”

Let the child try to ring the bell – it builds self-confidence.

Talk calmly and regularly about safety so that it becomes a natural part of your child's everyday life.

Did you know that…?

Xplora was actually founded after a father of four was separated from his son. It was this terrifying experience that led to the idea of a smartwatch that makes it easy for children and parents to stay in touch – without the child needing a mobile phone.

When you want a little extra security

Your child begins to move more independently as they get older. It is not uncommon for situations to arise where the child goes on an adventure and suddenly the whole Aula is looking for where they have actually set up camp. Here, technology adapted to children can provide extra security in everyday life without compromising the child's independence.

A smartwatch for children with GPS and calling function can prevent unnecessary stress because you can always keep track of your child's whereabouts and safely get in touch. With safe zones and simple communication, your child has the freedom to play while you still have an overview.

For slightly older children who may have outgrown a children's watch, their first mobile phone may be without internet and social media, but still fulfill the same needs. It allows you to make calls and text - without the risk of screen addiction or unwanted content.
