Our History

On an ordinary but life-changing day in 2016, Sten Kirkbak, a veteran of the telecommunications and tech industries, took his four-year-old son to a bustling shopping mall in Trondheim. Amidst the bustling crowd, the unthinkable happened – a little confusion, and suddenly his son was gone. The thirty long and anxious minutes that followed, before his son was found safe and sound, became a moment that would forever mark Sten’s life.

This terrifying experience became the turning point for an idea that would transform fear into hope and innovation. With his background and experience, Sten began to dream of a solution that would prevent other parents from experiencing the same heartbreaking feelings of fear and uncertainty. Thus was born the idea of ​​Xplora – a smartwatch for children that would not only give children a sense of freedom, but also give parents peace of mind.

Our current footprint

Today, after a few years, Xplora is available in 22 countries and distributed through nearly 100 retailers and operators. Over 1,000,000 people today use Xplora’s smartwatch for children, which has become a trusted companion for parents seeking security and connection in a digital world. Our success is built on a strong commitment to innovation and safety, and Xplora continues to be a leading force in the industry.

581 billion steps in 2023

During 2023, our users collectively took an impressive 581 billion steps – equivalent to a distance of around 200 million miles . That’s the equivalent of traveling around the world over 8,000 times , completing 418 return trips to the moon – or even a single trip to the sun and back.

Our social responsibility

We partner with leading organizations to be part of something bigger. Our promise is to teach children how small contributions to good causes can have a powerful, positive impact on the world.

In partnership with UNICEF Kid Power, we embarked on a mission to make a difference. By getting our users to take 10,000,000 steps, we pledged to provide clean drinking water to people in need. The added challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic, which affected access to clean water in several African developing countries, made our initiative even more important. Together, we achieved our goal and were able to provide one year's supply of clean water to over 4,000 children.
We partnered with One Tree Planted, a non-profit organization dedicated to global reforestation. Together, we planted 31,743 trees in British Columbia as part of the recovery from the devastating wildfires of 2017. This initiative has not only helped restore biodiversity in the area, but has also inspired future generations to take responsibility for the environment. Our efforts, which were completed in the fall of 2020, have played an important role in strengthening the health and resilience of British Columbia's unique ecosystems.
With 11,859 participants from around the world using the Xplora app, we reached our goal of 1,500,000,000 steps, marking a successful end to the campaign! The “Net Zero in 12 Months” campaign, an initiative designed to solve global challenges through local action, began with a project in Lebanon. Launched by Xplora in partnership with United Cities and Collectia, the campaign aimed to create real change by providing clean and sustainable energy solutions. By establishing a solar power plant, thousands of people in Lebanon gained access to renewable energy – an effort that has helped local communities rebuild and improve their lives in a sustainable way.
